The quintet writes: “The appearance of Louis Armstrong laid the foundation for a soloist tradition in jazz that continues to this day, which pushed the idea of frontline improvisation more and more into the background. At the end of the 50s, with the advent of modern trio playing by, among others, the Bill Evans Trio, the idea of collective improvisation re-entered the jazz landscape. However, this kind of dialogue rarely went beyond traditional trio or quartet formations. This is precisely the core idea of the Marcio de Sousa Quintet, which, with the force of three wind players, seeks and emphasizes this interaction and intimacy – frontline improvisation thus returns in a new guise. To question the tradition itself again and again, us five musicians derive our creativity from this critical examination.”
